HISTORY continued

We cut our first CD in early 2004, shortly after Missy joined the group. Nine of those 13 songs were original tunes written by Sonya and created by the band. There is a warmth and genuineness that comes across in the “Ties that Bind” CD. You really can see the heart of the Pie in that first project.
One of the founding Pie principles was that each band member did whatever was required to make the music work. It didn’t matter that you didn’t know how to play an instrument; it was just assumed that you would learn how to play it. We swapped instruments a lot in the early days as we tried to create the best sound for each song. It made us very versatile but it wasn’t until we had a full-time person on each instrument that we were able to solidify our sound.
In late 2006, just six weeks before we were scheduled to go into the recording studio, Randolyn Emerson a long-time friend and classical violinist, inquired about playing with the band. Randolyn said that she was looking for a little fun in her life and she didn’t know anybody that was having more fun than the Pie. She was right about that! The group agreed to give her a chance to learn a new skill, “fiddling.” Having a full-time fiddler allowed the band to develop its sound more fully and gave us an added dimension in the studio. Once we completed the CD, we began preparing for our new season; this also brought a change in fiddlers for the band. In January 2007, Shannon Thorne joined our group. Shannon has a great ear and has jumped in with both feet. We are looking forward to hitting the festivals with her.
