Julie Brown

Julie is the bass player and newest member of Sweet Potato Pie. She grew up attending bluegrass festivals all over North Carolina and Virginia with her family. Growing up in Harnett County around a lot of bluegrass and other styles of music she grew to love it all and still does. “I wore out the buttons on my radio trying to hear it all.” Her first musical experiences were on Piano, Clarinet, and Saxophone (in school band).

Her first stringed instrument was banjo around 1990. Her father was learning to play banjo and she would pick it up to try to play what he was playing and to help him understand the music and she fell in love with the banjo and stringed instruments.

Later, she bought a bass and while continuing to play banjo in different bands and jam sessions she started studying classical music on the bass. After marrying a banjo picker, she turned all focus onto the bass and has played and recorded with several North Carolina bands.

Upon graduating college with a Computer Engineering degree, Julie worked 15 years in Corporate America before trading it all in for a change of pace. Now Julie enjoys the quieter life of running a farm with cows, horses and dogs. She also helps operate their family oil business with her husband Stan.

When she has a free minute, she likes to knit, spin, sew, fish ,ride horses and help provide music for her local church meetings.
