Sonya grew up on the music of Loretta Lynn and Johnny Cash. One of her favorite childhood memories was singing with her dad as he played his guitar. “We didn’t know many songs back then so we just sang the same ones over and over again!”
During high school Sonya played piano and directed music for her local church. She was an award winning athelete who earned a basketball scholarship to play at UNCW. She graduated as a business major and has since operated several businesses.
Sonya and husband Jeff have three children. After the birth of her first child, music began calling to her again, so she borrowed her dad’s guitar and taught herself to play adding the mandolin and fiddle to her repertoire. Several years later she began writing music. When the band formed in 2000 just prior to the birth of her 3rd child, Sonya had several songs to debut. The Pie’s musical styling has been greatly influenced by Sonya’s music. Her writings also include jingles, and musicals.
The band has been a dream come true for this North Carolina native. Sonya’s vision and drive for the band has helped create one of the most entertaining acts on the circuit.
She is a wife, full-time mom, business owner, and community athletic coach. When she has time, she still enjoys a good game of basketball. Sonya is grateful for a family who supports her and gives her room to follow her dreams. Her personal motto: “Let’s make it happen!”
